Starting Wage: $19.00

Job Summary

The Cleaner plays a vital role in supporting the mission of Ark Aid Street Mission Inc. by maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all who enter our space. This position is responsible for the upkeep of the building and surrounding grounds, including janitorial duties, minor repairs, and safety checks. The Cleaner also assists with the sorting and distribution of donations, contributing to the overall functioning and care of the facility. This role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and a proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness and safety within a community-centered environment.

Overview: Ark Aid is a Christian Mission serving the homeless and marginalized community in the city of London, Ontario. Kitchen & Facilities Team contributes to the Mission of Ark Aid Street Mission Inc., which identifies that in God’s love, we will facilitate opportunities for people to experience love, healing and liberation, by providing services to our community and building relationships with each individual.

Key Responsibilities

Maintaining a clean and presentable building, both inside and outside.

Cleaning and disinfecting high-traffice areas, removing snow, emptying trash, making minor repairs as needed and tending to the grounds of the organization.

Sanitizes restrooms and keeps entrances clear

Responsible for performing routine safety checks of ventilation sytstems, heating and cooling systems, and other essential services.

Tracking inventory and ordering all janitorial items, and ensuring that tools/supplies are in working condition.

In addition to the janitorial duties, this position will require successful candidates to assist in receiving, sorting, and distributing donations. Donations come as a secondary need to the janitorial duties.

Job Requirements

The Cleaner should have the following skills, education and experience:

Education & Certifications:

High school Diploma or equivalent is an asset but not required

‍Experience:

Previous janitorial or cleaning experience is required

Previous experience with minor repairs and identifying health and safety concerns is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to move quickly and lift up to 50lbs is required

The ideal candidate will be able to see the work that needs to be done and ensure it gets done

Other Requirements:

Class G driver's license preferred

Criminal record check (VSC) completed

Current First Aid/CPR

Ability to be on your feet for long periods

Ability to bend and lift to 25 lbs

Working Conditions

The Cleaner position at Ark Aid Street Mission Inc. involves work in a variety of settings, including both indoor and outdoor areas across multiple Ark Aid facilities. Duties may be performed in offices, kitchens, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, storage areas, and on exterior grounds, including sidewalks, parking areas, and donation drop-off points.

Working conditions include:

Exposure to cleaning chemicals and sanitation products, requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety procedures and WHMIS standards.

Work in proximity to marginalized populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, and other vulnerabilities. Professionalism, respect, and compassion are essential at all times.

Physical demands include standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and walking for extended periods, as well as working in varying weather conditions (rain, snow, heat)

Frequent handling of donations, which may include sorting, lifting, and transporting items in various conditions.

Exposure to bodily fluids, waste, or discarded materials, particularly in high-traffic or unsheltered areas.

Potential encounters with pests, insects, and rodents, especially in exterior spaces or storage areas. The Cleaner is expected to report sightings and assist with preventative measures in accordance with pest control protocols and health and safety guidelines.

All tasks are to be performed following Ark Aid’s Health and Safety policies, Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements, and infection prevention standards. Support and training are provided to ensure the well-being and safety of staff in this essential role.
