Cleaner/Janitor – Job Description

Reports To

Sanitation Supervisor

Job Summary

The Cleaner/Janitor is responsible for deep cleaning and sanitizing production machinery,

equipment, and work areas during off-peak hours. This role plays a critical part in maintaining

food safety standards by ensuring all machinery and production surfaces are properly cleaned,

disinfected, and free of contaminants before the next production shift. The position requires

dismantling, cleaning, and reassembling machine components, as well as sanitizing floors, walls,

and workstations to uphold strict hygiene and operational standards.

Responsibilities Associated with Performing the Job

Machine Cleaning & Sanitation (Primary Focus)

• Dismantle, clean, and sanitize Vemag parts and all removable machine components to

prevent contamination.

• Perform deep cleaning of machine belts, dies, and waterjet cutters to remove residue

buildup.

• Clean and disinfect mixing bowls, ensuring no leftover materials remain.

• Sanitize lines, conveyors, and semi-production lines, ensuring smooth operation and

hygiene compliance.

• Maintain and disinfect ingredient bins and wheels to prevent cross-contamination.

• Ensure oven room equipment is properly cleaned and sanitized.

• Monitor, report, and address any sanitation-related equipment malfunctions or

maintenance needs.

• Other duties as assigned.

Facility Sanitation

• Clean and sanitize floors in four different departments to maintain a hygienic environment.

• Wash and disinfect walls and ceilings, removing any accumulated dust, grease, or debris.

• Ensure all cleaning chemicals and sanitation tools are stored properly after use.

• Adhere to all WHMIS, GMP, HACCP, and Food Safety standards for chemical use and

sanitation procedures.

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum two years of industrial machine cleaning experience, preferably in food

manufacturing.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Strong knowledge of GMP, HACCP, and WHMIS sanitation protocols.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision during overnight shifts.

• High attention to detail and commitment to equipment hygiene and sanitation standards.

• Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs and work in physically demanding conditions.

• Comfortable working in environments with noise, dust, odours, and cleaning chemicals.

• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to machine sanitation and

maintenance.

Mental Effort Required to Perform the Job

Mental attentiveness and focus is required to perform tasks according to the job. Capacity to

receive and implement instructions. Job tasks are repetitious. Attention to detail.

Physical Effort Required to Perform the Job

Physical capacity of lifting or moving up to 50 lbs may be required. Pushing, pulling, griping,

climbing stairs and operating cleaning equipment required. Seating and standing for prolonged

periods of time.

Working Conditions while performing the job

Works within established guidelines in an area that has continuous noise from production

machinery. Exposure to noise, dust, odours, fumes, oils, hot and cold temperature. Works in a

bright environment. Overtime may be required as needed.
